Why Self-Consumption Now Rules: Scambio sul Posto Is Gone
The old net-metering mechanism, Scambio sul Posto, closed to new systems in September 2025. New installations now fall under Ritiro Dedicato — an outright sale of your surplus to the GSE at roughly 0.10–0.13 €/kWh (with a guaranteed floor near 0.0475 €/kWh), against the ~0.30 €/kWh you pay to import.
That is the whole reason storage matters. Every kWh you export now earns about a third of what it saves you if you use it yourself. The strategy the market has converged on is simple: self-consume as much as possible, and treat an EV plus a battery as the tools that make it happen.
Your EV Is Already a Battery on Wheels
Before costing a wall battery, look at the one you may already park outside. A modern EV holds 50–80 kWh — five to eight times a typical home battery. Move charging into the solar window (roughly 11:00–15:00) and the car absorbs the midday surplus that would otherwise sell for 0.11 €, offsetting grid power worth 0.30 € instead.
For many households, timing the EV is worth more than buying a battery, and a scheduled or solar-aware wallbox does it automatically — lifting self-consumption at no extra storage cost. The catch is the familiar one: the car has to be home during the day. If it is parked at the office from 08:00 to 18:00, the solar peak passes with the car gone — and that is exactly the gap a home battery fills.
What a Home Battery Costs — and What the Deduction Does
Installed residential storage in Italy runs roughly 600–900 € per usable kWh. The 50% Bonus Ristrutturazione then halves the effective cost:

The fine print that decides whether you get that second column:
- The 50% rate applies to your prima casa (primary residence) in 2026; a second home gets 36%.
- The deduction is recovered over ten equal annual instalments against your IRPEF, within a €96,000 spending cap per dwelling and a storage sub-limit of €1,000/kWh.
- You need enough IRPEF liability to absorb it. Retirees on small pensions or the self-employed under the flat-rate regime (regime forfettario) may not be able to use the deduction directly — check with a commercialista before assuming the halved price.
Does It Pay? The Honest Arithmetic
A battery's benefit is arbitrage: every kWh it shifts from export to self-use is worth the ~0.19 € gap between the 0.30 € you would otherwise pay and the 0.11 € you would otherwise earn. Take a 5 kWp system in Rome (~6,500 kWh/year), a VW ID.4 driving 15,000 km, retail at 0.30 €/kWh and Ritiro Dedicato at ~0.11 €/kWh:

Here is where Italy separates from Germany. Time-shifting the car still captures a chunk of the gain for free — but the 50% deduction drops a 10 kWh battery to roughly €2,750–4,000 net, so even the ~€400–500 a year it adds delivers a payback of about 6–9 years — comfortably inside the battery's 10-year warranty. Without the deduction that same battery would run past the warranty, exactly as it does in Germany. The tax relief is the difference between a long game and a genuinely good investment.
When a Battery Earns Its Place in Italy
- You have the IRPEF liability to claim the 50% deduction — this is the single biggest factor; it is what pulls payback inside the warranty.
- Your car is away during the solar peak — the surplus would otherwise leave at ~0.11 €, so storing it at 0.30 € value is a clear win.
- You have heavy evening load — a heat pump or large after-dark draw that solar cannot reach directly.
When to Skip It
- You cannot use the deduction — with no IRPEF to offset (small pension, regime forfettario), the battery loses half its value case and the maths lengthen sharply.
- You can reliably charge the car midday — your EV already stores far more than any wall battery, for free.
- Your system is small — a 2–3 kWp array rarely produces enough surplus to keep a dedicated battery busy.
