Is a Home Battery Worth It for EV Charging in Germany? Zero VAT, No Grants, and the Self-Consumption Gap

The German Self-Consumption Gap Is the Whole Case
Germany hands solar owners the sharpest self-consumption gap in Europe. Since February 2026 the feed-in tariff for a new system up to 10 kWp pays just 7.78 ct/kWh for the surplus you export, while you buy grid power back at roughly 32 ct/kWh. Every kilowatt-hour you use yourself instead of exporting is worth more than four times as much.
That gap is the entire reason home batteries have become standard here — roughly one in every two rooftop solar orders in Germany now ships with a battery. First, the Grant Myth: There Isn't One Anymore
Plenty of German homeowners still plan around a storage subsidy that no longer exists. To be clear about 2026:
- Bavaria's PV-Speicher programme ended in April 2022 and was not replaced. Most Länder are the same — only a handful still run schemes open to ordinary single-family homes.
- KfW 442 ("Solarstrom für Elektroautos") — the popular PV-plus-battery-plus-wallbox grant — was exhausted on its first day in September 2023 and discontinued, with no new funds since.
What is actually left nationwide:
- 0% VAT on the supply and installation of PV systems including battery storage up to 30 kWp, in effect through 2026 — this is the big one.
- KfW 270 low-interest loans, arranged through your house bank, to finance the system — a cheap loan, not a subsidy.
- Occasional municipal or local-utility grants — small and location-dependent, worth a quick check with your Stadtwerke.
The takeaway: don't wait for a battery grant. In Germany the case for storage rests on the self-consumption gap, not on subsidy.
Your EV Is Already a Battery on Wheels
Before costing a wall battery, look at the one you may already park on the drive. A modern EV holds 50–80 kWh — five to eight times a typical home battery. Move charging into the solar window (roughly 11:00–15:00) and the car absorbs the midday surplus that would otherwise export at 7.78 ct, offsetting grid power worth 32 ct instead.
For many households, timing the EV is worth more than buying a battery, and a scheduled or solar-aware wallbox does it automatically — lifting self-consumption at no extra storage cost. The limitation is the obvious one: the car has to be home during the day. If it is at work from 08:00 to 18:00, the solar peak passes with the car gone — and that is exactly the gap a home battery fills.
What a Home Battery Costs in Germany (2026)
With 0% VAT applied, installed residential storage runs roughly 800–1,000 € per usable kWh, cheaper per kWh at larger sizes.

Does the Battery Pay? The Honest Arithmetic
A battery's benefit is arbitrage: every kWh it shifts from export to self-use is worth the ~24 ct gap between the 32 ct you would otherwise pay and the 7.78 ct you would otherwise earn. That is the best such spread in Europe — but the sums still deserve honesty.
Take a 5 kWp system in Frankfurt (~5,000 kWh/year), a VW ID.4 driving 20,000 km, retail at 32 ct/kWh and feed-in at 7.78 ct/kWh:

Read it the way the numbers actually fall. Time-shifting the car captures most of the gain for free. A 10 kWh battery at €8,000–10,000 then adds roughly €400–500 a year — a payback comfortably beyond the battery's typical 10-year warranty on economics alone. Germany's large self-consumption gap makes storage more defensible here than almost anywhere else in Europe, but on money alone it is still a long game, not a quick win.
When a Battery Earns Its Place in Germany
- Your car is away during the solar peak — the surplus would otherwise leave at 7.78 ct, so storing it at 32 ct value is a genuine win.
- You have heavy evening load — a heat pump or large after-dark draw that solar cannot reach directly.
- You are future-proofing — the feed-in tariff falls every six months and an EEG reform is due in 2027, so self-consumption only becomes more valuable over time.
- Backup matters to you — riding out an outage has a value the spreadsheet does not capture.
When to Skip It
- You can reliably charge the car midday — your EV already stores far more than any wall battery, for free.
- Your system is small — a 2–3 kWp array rarely produces enough surplus to keep a dedicated battery busy.
Is a Home Battery Worth It for EV Charging in Germany?
On the raw economics: rarely inside its warranty — but Germany is the closest case in Europe. Just do not buy it expecting a fast payback, and do not wait for a grant that no longer exists.
