Is a Home Battery Worth It for EV Charging in Poland? Net Billing, Mój Prąd, and the Real Numbers

Under net billing, exported solar earns roughly half what you pay to import — so self-consumption is the whole game. Here's when a home battery genuinely pays for a Polish EV owner, and when your car is the only battery you need.

Net Billing Changed the Battery Question in Poland

When Poland replaced 1:1 net metering with net billing in April 2022, it quietly rewrote the home-battery calculation. Under the old system the grid was a free battery — every kWh you exported came back at retail value. Under net billing, electricity you export is credited at the wholesale RCEm price, roughly 0.35–0.45 PLN/kWh, while you still buy back at the retail G11 rate of around 0.85 PLN/kWh. Every unit you export and later re-import loses more than half its value.

That gap is the entire case for storing your solar rather than exporting it — and for a household with an EV, it changes what you should buy first.

Your EV Is Already a Battery on Wheels

Before costing a home battery, look at the storage you may already own. A modern EV holds 50–80 kWh — five to eight times a typical home battery. If you can move charging into the solar window (roughly 11:00–15:00), the car absorbs the midday surplus that would otherwise export at 0.40 PLN, and instead offsets grid power worth 0.85 PLN.

For many Polish households, timing the EV is worth more than buying a battery. A scheduled or solar-aware charger shifts the car's charging to peak production automatically, lifting self-consumption with no extra storage cost — the cheapest self-consumption gain available before you spend anything on storage.

The limitation is obvious: you have to be plugged in during the day. If the car is at work from 08:00 to 18:00, the solar peak passes with the car gone — and that is exactly the gap a home battery fills.

What a Home Battery Costs in Poland (2026)

Installed residential storage in Poland runs roughly 2,500–3,500 PLN per usable kWh, with budget systems dipping toward 2,000 PLN/kWh and premium ones above 4,000. That is meaningfully cheaper per kWh than Western Europe, thanks to lower installation labour.

A 10 kWh battery covers only about 13% of a large EV's full charge — so storage complements solar EV charging, it does not replace the grid for a big car battery. We cover that trade-off in detail in the home battery for EV guide.

The Storage Grant: Up to 16,000 PLN

Poland's subsidy money has followed the same logic and shifted decisively toward storage. Under the Mój Prąd programme and its home-storage successor (Przydomowe Magazyny Energii), funded through the Modernisation Fund, homeowners can claim up to 16,000 PLN toward an electrical storage system of at least 2 kWh, alongside support for the PV installation itself.

Two things to know before you count on it:

  • Rounds open periodically and the budget is finite. The 2026 round ran in spring; monitor the official NFOŚiGW portal for the next window and prepare your documents in advance, because sessions fill fast.
  • You must be on net billing. Prosumers still on legacy net metering generally have to switch to net billing to qualify for storage funding.

On top of the grant, the thermal-modernisation relief (ulga termomodernizacyjna) lets you deduct qualifying costs — storage included — up to 53,000 PLN across as many as six tax years. Stacked, the grant and the relief offset a large share of a battery's cost, which is what moves it from "hard to justify" toward "sensible."

Battery vs. Bigger Array: Which First?

With storage this grant-supported it is tempting to add a battery by default. The honest order of priority for a Polish EV household:

  1. Right-size the panels for your annual EV plus household demand — see how many panels you actually need.
  2. Time-shift the EV into the solar window with a scheduled charger — the cheapest self-consumption gain there is.
  3. Add a battery if the car is away during peak sun, if you have significant evening load, or if a storage-grant round is open — because that is where the numbers actually turn.

A Warsaw Worked Example: What a Battery Actually Adds

Take a 4 kWp system (10 × 400W) in Warsaw producing ~4,000 kWh a year, a VW ID.4 Pro driving 18,000 km, retail at 0.85 PLN/kWh and export at 0.40 PLN/kWh. A battery's benefit is pure arbitrage: every kWh it shifts from export to self-use is worth the 0.45 PLN gap between the two.

The pattern is the whole point. Moving the car into the solar window captures most of the available gain for free. A 10 kWh battery — around 25,000–35,000 PLN, or ~14,000 PLN after the storage grant — then adds only about 500–600 PLN a year on a 4 kWp system. Even net of the grant, that is a payback well beyond the battery's typical 10-year warranty. On a larger 6–8 kWp array with more surplus to store, the battery cycles harder and the maths improve — but for the average Polish EV household, storage is a resilience-and-convenience purchase more than an investment.

Whichever way the numbers fall, note that a grant-eligible battery has to be a permanently installed unit fitted alongside your PV by a certified installer — not a plug-in power station. Price it as part of the whole system when you get install quotes.

Is a Home Battery Worth It for EV Charging in Poland?

For most 4 kWp EV households: not on economics alone — yet. Net billing genuinely rewards self-consumption, but your EV is a far bigger and cheaper battery than anything you can hang on the wall. Right-size the panels, put the car on a scheduled charger, and you capture most of the benefit with no storage at all.

A home battery earns its place when your car is away during the solar peak so the surplus would otherwise export at 0.40 PLN; when a storage-grant round is open, because up to 16,000 PLN plus the termomodernizacja deduction narrows the payback sharply; when you run heavy evening load like a heat pump; or when you value backup power through outages. Outside those cases, buy the panels and the smart charger first, then revisit storage once you have seen a year of your real surplus.
